How You Can Help

Volunteer

Some animals are cared for in the foster family’s home until they are ready for adoption. Click here to contact us for more details on this program.

Dog Walking
Dog walking volunteers play a vital role in meeting the house training, well-being and exercise requirements of our dogs at the shelter.  We are so very grateful for all the walkers, and the dogs who are taken out daily learn how to conduct themselves better on a leash. This important program sees many dogs adopted sooner as they are more social and well behaved.  All people interested in dog walking just need to show up any day and if before open hour, need to use the employee entrance. Just ask the staff for the rules and regulations book to read before you head out the door for the first time. Our staff are happy to welcome you and see that you are informed on the details about each dog. Happy walking.

Fund Raising Events
These special people help us plan, organize and execute a variety of exciting events that raise funds and awareness in our community.  There are people who cannot work or help in the shelter for allergic reason, or perhaps it’s just ‘too hard’ so, this is an ideal way to help out. Click here to contact us for details of upcoming events, or if you have some ideas, please don’t hesitate to discuss them with us.

Office Support
We are always busy and sometimes it’s just too much work and not enough hours in a day. We could always use some people to help with photo copying, unfolding newspapers, telephone calls, filing and general helping with behind the scenes but necessary office work.

Fostering Program

Many people want to share some love and kindness with an animal.  Being a FOSTER parent can not only help the animal, but can add to your life as well.  Most animals just need some TLC and a place that is quieter than at the shelter for a time, but in some serious cases we need very experienced foster families who have been in our program for a long time.  At Quinte Humane Society we provide care to all animals, but there are times when one-on-one is more beneficial.

What are the requirements to become a FOSTER caregiver?

  • You must be 18 years of age.
  • All of your owned pets must be spayed or neutered and up to date with all vaccinations (proof required)
  • An extra room to keep the foster animals separate from your own.
  • Transportation is needed for up pick up and dropping off to the shelter.
  • Lots of time, love and patience.

Application
Drop by the shelter during open hours for application form

Supplies
All supplies are supplied by QHS including food, litter, toys etc.

How long will they be with you?
This is different depending on the circumstances.  It is usually 2 to 6 weeks.

Which animals will need your help?

  • Mother cats & dogs with nursing babies
  • Kitten and pups too young for adoption
  • Animals recovering from surgery
  • Animals recovering from injuries and often times on medication
  • Animals that could benefit from socialization

Contact the shelter for further details if interested.
